The Music Center of Los Angeles County is seeking a motivated, visionary, and entrepreneurial leader to oversee all public programming of the new Civic Park, (a property owned by LA County and managed by the Music Center).
In addition to programmatic responsibilities, the Park Director will oversee certain operational aspects of the Park, and will act as the public spokesperson for all park-related activities.
The Park Director will work closely with LA County and the Park oversight committee. The Park Director will report directly to the Music Center Vice President of Programming, coordinating closely with all Music Center programming.
The Park Director will establish this new Civic Park as an important public asset for free programming, building its profile and reputation will demand an ability to conduct extensive outreach in all of Los Angeles County's diverse communities.
Under Music Center board direction, and leadership of Los Angeles County Park Oversight Committee, the Director will report to the Vice President of Programming. The successful candidate will balance internal and external demands in directing park activities.
Internally, the Director will foster effective working relationships with Music Center departments: Security, Landscaping, Engineering, Production, Scheduling and Events, Development and Marketing. Externally, the Director will work closely with Resident Companies, community and education performing arts partners, performers, and performing arts organizations from across the entire arts and entertainment field. This position will supervise a staff of 3 and manage an annual budget of $800,000.00.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMIED TO:
Park Opening: Produce high-profile Park opening event to be held in Summer 2012, honoring the County Supervisors and other civic leaders, also establishing the reputation of the Park as an arts/entertainment destination.
Park Management: Work closely with internal operation departments to ensure appropriate coordination of services and scheduling. In conjunction with Events and Scheduling department, work with various regulatory agencies to acquire proper permitting and documentation needed for events. Work with cross-functional teams in Development and Marketing to create public profile and broad participation in the Park.
Ongoing Public Programming: Book and manage public performances in the Park, activating the Park with a breadth of offerings such as farmers' markets, concerts, Tai Chi, film screenings, festivals etc. Has a depth of familiarity with arts and culture offerings throughout Greater Los Angeles area, and attend performances to further maintain and cultivate that expertise.
Private Events: Collaborate closely with Scheduling and Events teams for non-public events, such as private parties and weddings.
Outreach: Be Park representative and spokesperson; promote programs, make important announcements, handle demands of the media and unexpected situations; build countywide public support, attract broad cross-section of Angelinos.
Event Administration: Oversee 3 staff -- scheduling, booking, and production manager. Develop all schedules, budgets, and programming plans. Manage daily and ongoing logistics, monitor expenses according to County and Music Center requirements, and communicate effectively with all pertinent constituents.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
- BA degree.
- A minimum of 7 years professional experience in front-line management of performance, programming, entertainment, and/or events management.
- A background in non-profit and/or public management is preferred.
- Full understanding of Los Angeles market place and possessing a strong local network.

The Music Center, Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County, one of the nation's premier performing arts institutions, is seeking a Director of Advancement Services.
The Director of Advancement Services (DOAS) is part of the management team under the Vice President for Advancement, reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development. The DOAS provides leadership and partnership and management of business processes, database functionality, data management analysis and reporting. DOAS works closely with the LA Opera and Music Center's Finance and Accounting Departments to ensure accurate communication and consistent data integrity. The DOAS supports all business units use of Tessitura under Advancement, as well as assisting with database use in the Education and Programming Departments and the President's Office. This may include conversion of shadow databases into Tessitura. The DOAS provides analysis and reporting of gift and constituent data and philanthropic trends to the Executive Leadership. The DOAS supervises staff for donor research, data entry and integrity. The DOAS monitors and initiates updates for data protocol and policies on a timely schedule.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
General:
- Acts as the Music Center representative on the Tessitura Steering Committee and advocates for the business uses of the systems by Music Center units.
- Active involvement in the planning and execution of the upgrade of the new Tessitura version 11 for the segment of the database unique to Music Center and cooperatively for the shared records.
- Manages training for Music Center staff as the new version becomes active; as well training on an ongoing basis for refreshment of continuing staff and for new staff.
- Provides timely and accurate reports for Vice President and Associate Vice President on a defined schedule and "as needed". Monitors and reports on fundraising results weekly, monthly and quarterly with year to date comparisons.
- Works closely with Finance and Accounting to ensure accurate reconciliation of gifts and biographical data, using high standards of data policies, definitions of terms and data checking for consistent, reliable data integrity year over year.
- Budget control and management for Development units with monthly reports.
- Identifies, develops and produces the required basic queries and lists for Music Center business units.
- Keeps a current inventory of constituent records on Tessitura.
- Ascertains and recommends resources needed to accomplish tasks and find efficient and automated solutions
- Monitors gift acceptance policies and ensures consistency year over year with Finance Department and the Music Center Foundation.
- Oversees Donor Research to ensure appropriate information is provided for all users, executive leadership, major gift officers and volunteers.
- Supervises all data input and checks for accuracy ensuring reliable data integrity.
BUSINESS UNIT SUPP0RT
Ticketing:
- Proactive in maximizing the value and quality of data introduced into the common system by ticket purchases. Frequent scheduling of data audits and corrections using automated daily processes to identify and fix duplicates and other mistakes and inconsistencies.
- Systematic review of new subscribers and ticket buyers for Major Gift prospects.
- When appropriate, matches ticket buyer with wealth screening ratings.
Annual Fund:
- Provides list management for a complex schedule of overlapping appeals.
- Ensures proper appeal coding and memberships levels are in place and frequently checked for accuracy.
- Collaborates and supports the Annual fund team to ensure they are able to rely on data to be used for direct mail, telefunding and support groups dues, acquisition, renewals and upgrades.
- Tracks volume of gifts entering the system to ensure there are enough resources to keep the data current.
Major Gifts and Institutional Giving:
- Creates a pipeline report on status of gifts in process from donor identification, moves management, solicitations and gifts closed.
- Monitors and reports monthly on gift officer activity.
- Provides customized lists for Prospect Review.
- Oversees production of research reports for Major Gift prospects.
- Assists Institutional Giving Coordinator and Grants Manager in automating weekly reports.
Marketing:
- Simplifies and automates transfer of data for effective use of the system.
- Sets up system for appropriate segmentation of marketing constituencies.
- Enhances website technology and technical implementation of social media.
- Remains current on technical applications to marketing efforts.
Events and Stewardship:
- Leads the effort to automate merging of lists using consistent formatting and protocol for addresses, salutations and titles.
- Leads the effort for effective use of Tessitura for all aspects of event management and train users accordingly.
- Supervises event briefings.
- Automates/monitors electronic calendar for stewardship of donors.
- Reviews and monitors guidelines for listing donor names/recognition in the system.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS

Required skills and qualifications include:

Familiarity with Tessitura donor and patron data management system, preferred: or a system with similar complexity required. Working knowledge of FASB and CASE reporting and accounting standards. Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL server administration, query generation and data exports. Demonstrated possession of strong analytical, mathematical and problem solving skills. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet hard deadlines. Excellent organizational skills including ability to identify priorities; work independently and use logic in problem-solving situations. Excellent negotiating skills with colleagues and vendors.

The Development Department is seeking a Director of Institutional Giving who will be responsible for securing significant annual and project support from institutional funders. The Director will be responsible for developing strategies for funding requests, conducting prospect research, and overseeing the writing proposals and reports. The Director of Institutional Giving also directs and executes cultivation and stewardship of government, foundation, and corporation donors and prospects.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished and creative professional that will help spur the institution to new levels of fundraising success. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in developing, leading and managing a breadth of institutional giving programs, recruiting and retaining an outstanding staff, possessing a collaborative style, and demonstrating a strong track record of achievement.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Strategize, develop and implement an ongoing program for institutional support; identify and cultivate prospects, interact with board members, donors and community leaders to develop specific donor strategies, and successfully solicit and close gifts and grants to meet the Music Center's annual and long term institutional fundraising goals and needs.
- Manage a portfolio of 125-150 institutional giving donors and prospects with a focus on donors that will result in solicitations of $50,000 or more.
- Acquire thorough knowledge and understanding of the Music Center's history, mission, goals, and programs in order to best shape grant applications and sponsorship opportunities.
- Work with other Music Center staff across departments in order to determine funding needs, scope, and feasibility of projects; gather information, translate it into effective, persuasive proposals using sound program planning and budgeting, and find institutional funding opportunities that match with the Music Center's program needs and the prospective donors' guidelines.
- Research and identify appropriate and likely sources of institutional funding. With support of the Grants Manager, research proposal requirements and submittal deadlines and analyze data to produce appropriate donor cultivation and stewardship strategies for foundation and government funders.
- Review approved budgets of projects and programs for which funding is sought and transform them into the appropriate formats for specific funding agencies.
- Work in close collaboration with the Marketing team and other Development staff to ensure fulfillment of corporate marketing and sponsor obligations.
- Develop strategic corporate marketing sponsorship packages and opportunities to support Music Center programs and initiatives.
- Serve as lead for site visits that include other senior Music Center staff; supervise coordination and participation of others as appropriate by preparing support materials, briefings and talking points.
- With and through staff, prepare, write, and edit all major foundation and government grant applications, with an understanding of specific funders' application guidelines; prepare timely progress reports and develop a timeline to track status of applications.
- Working with the Institutional Giving Coordinator, direct the development and implementation of a corporate membership program to secure annual corporate gifts of $5,000 and above. Program will require development of strategies for corporate prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
- Maintain contact with grant-making organizations during their review of a submitted application in order to be able to supply additional supportive material as requested.
- Average 12-15 visits/moves per month with institutional donors and prospects (including in-person visits, out of the office); submit 1-2 proposals for support per month; and continually qualify new prospects monthly.
- Supervise Grants Manager's preparation, assembly, and timely delivery of proposals and reports.
- Supervise Institutional Giving Coordinator's management of the corporate membership program and other support responsibilities.
- Responsible for managing Institutional Giving revenue projections and providing reports and updates to supervisors, Finance Office and others, as requested.
- Ensure that the institutional donors and prospect information is up-to-date in the fundraising database.
- Maintain ongoing and active networking with internal and external constituencies.
- Represent the Music Center in the community as appropriate.
- Track moves using Tessitura as a base and report on progress on a monthly basis.
The position supervises a Grants Manager and an Institutional Giving Coordinator
Required skills and qualifications include:
A Bachelor's degree (advanced degree preferred) with three to five or more years of experience in fundraising, preferably in cultural, education or related non-profit organizations and preferably in Institutional Giving.
The successful candidate must have training and experience in grant writing; be self-motivated in initiating contacts and visits with potential institutional donors. Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively about engaging institutional donors, and to develop plans of action and follow through. Experience with the Southern California donor community a plus. A proven track record in planning and achieving short and long term goals and development of strategies. Will have demonstrated success in securing gifts and grants of $50,000 and above from leading funding sources, including government, corporate, and foundations. Experience in soliciting gifts personally. Position requires a clear, imaginative thinker and a strong writer who is able to recognize and strategically build connections between grant and sponsorship opportunities and the Music Center's needs. Must have experience leading and managing a team; Ability to recruit, train, inspire and motivate staff. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and influencing skills. Political, analytical and negotiation skills required to manage in a complex environment; Sound judgment and superior problem solving ability; Integrity and fiscal accountability. Ability to work collaboratively and in an energetic and changing environment. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with donors, volunteers, and administrative personnel. Must be willing and available to work evenings and weekends according to program and performance related scheduling. Some travel, mostly within Southern California. Experience working with Tessitura, Raiser's Edge, Millennium or similar fundraising data management system preferred.
