Martin Espino - Indigenous Music of the Ancient Americas

Workshop: Martin Espino, a performer, teacher, composer and recording artist, brings more than 25 years of experience into his workshops about the indigenous music of ancient North, Central and South America. His highly visual and interactive hands-on sessions feature pre-Hispanic wind and percussion instruments, and can be customized to relate to specific topics. Creating A Rainforest Soundscape allows students to play instruments that imitate the sounds of rain, frogs and birds. Singing a Mayan Song involves movement, stories of the Mexican rain forest and participants singing in the Mayan language and playing such native percussion instruments as turtle shells, water drums, butterfly cocoon rattles and more. In Making a Traditional Bamboo Panpipes, students learn to sand, decorate, and play a set of bamboo panpipes. Other sessions may involve construction of a clapper stick, gourd rattle or gourd water drum.
