Building awareness of the importance of arts education in our public schools

2008-2009 Club 100 Board
|
Founded in 1976, Club 100 of the Music Center is a support group of Education and Family Programs at the Music Center: Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County. Club 100 is a group of dynamic professional and civic-minded women whose primary goals are to build awareness of the importance of arts education in our public schools, to raise funds for the Music Center's Artist-in-Residence and Teacher Partnership Program (ARTP) and to provide support for the annual BRAVO Awards. Sheila Poncher and Stephanie Fisher-White are co-presidents of Club 100 for 2010-2011.
Research studies show that students who participate in the arts improve their achievement in other subjects including math, reading, and writing. They earn better grades, do better on exams, perform more community services, watch fewer hours of television, and out perform their non-arts peers on the SAT exams. Arts education has been proven to foster self esteem, teamwork, and cross-cultural communication and understanding. For these reasons, Club 100 members are passionate about supporting arts education in the schools.
What We Do To Achieve These Goals
Club 100 provides financial support to selected schools to purchase Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Programs at a substantially reduced rate. Last season, Club 100 donated over $40,000 for AIR programs in dance, music, theatre and the visual arts for students in 55 classrooms, touching the lives of over 1,000 children. With the support of Club 100, students are not only experiencing the joy of the arts but teachers are being given concrete strategies for integrating the arts into their classrooms, extending the impact of these programs far beyond the residencies. Last year's efforts included:
- Students in 12 classrooms at the Multicultural Learning Center in Canoga Park 6-week residencies in music, dance and theatre;
- Kentwood Elementary in Westchester with 6-week residencies in dance and theatre reaching students in 13 classrooms;
- Students in 5 classrooms at New Heights Charter Academy in Central Los Angeles 6-week residencies in music;
- Bushnell Way Elementary in Boyle Heights 6-week residencies in theatre for students in 4 classrooms;
- The entire student body (a total of 21 classrooms) at the New Open World (NOW) Academy with 6-week residencies in dance, theatre, and the visual arts!
In 1995, Club 100 became the official sponsor of the annual BRAVO Awards, a unique and extraordinary Music Center event which showcases arts education in our schools by honoring exemplary arts educators for their innovation and leadership, and the resulting accomplishments of their students. Bravo Awards videos for 2008 and 2007. Currently, Club 100 members review applications of nominees for the BRAVO Awards and provide support for the Bravo Awards through the Club 100 Bravo Endowment.
Club 100 volunteers at the annual Very Special Arts Festival, which celebrates the artistic achievements of students with disabilities. More than 8,000 students attend this event every year. Everyone has a great time! Members arrive at the Festival with terracotta pots, colorful stickers and potting soil. Students plant seeds in the pots they have decorated. By the end of the event, all the 2,400+ pots and 25,000 stickers are gone.

Club 100 members have produced three A+ Arts videos spotlighting BRAVO Award winning schools: Rockdale Elementary, Crescenta Valley High School and Millikan Middle School. Written documentation will accompany these videos to provide information about how these schools implement school-wide arts education programming.
Club 100, in conjunction with Music Center Education staff, funds programs at schools that encourage the development of outstanding arts programs, develops materials that support school-wide arts education and facilitates the development of future BRAVO Award winning teachers and schools.
